The Leadership Of Cabral Libii’s PCRN, Recently Told Militants That Chance For Biya Regime To Again Postpone Legislative and Municipal Elections Is Slim, And That The Elections Will Likely Hold On February 6, 2027. But A Declaration By Finance Minister, Motaze, That “The State Coffer Is Almost Empty”, Has Sparked Fears In The Opposition, That The Regime Wants To Against Postpone Elections.
The leadership of Hon Cabral Libiii Ngue’s PCRN, as part of efforts to regularly edify or sensitize militants on some major issues in public discussions, recently prepared a six point sensitization document for the militants. Point No. 1 was on the rumour that has been circulating that the Biya regime will again postpone the much expected legislative and municipal elections, because things do not allegedly still look good for the CPDM in the field, after the 2025 controversial presidential election.
But in the document, the leadership of PCRN dismissed the allegation or rumour that the legislative and municipal elections will again be postpone, and urged the militants to stay focus on preparations for the elections. “Le corps electoral devrait etre convoque le 9 Novembre 2026, et les elections devraient avoir lieu le 6 Fevrier 2027”, the PCRN leadership said. The PCRN leadership’s view was that the President of the Republic will on November 9, 2026 convene Cameroonians to the polls for the legislative and municipal elections, which should hold on February 6, 2027.
Possibility To Postpone The Elections Is Slim
The PCRN leadership in their analysis explained that for the Biya regime to postpone the legislative and municipal elections, it needs that the MPs should meet in session., and that as things stand now, MPs will only meet in an ordinary session (budgetary session) as from November 10, 2026, while the latest date for the President of the Republic to convene electorates to the polls for the twin elections, is November 9, 2026. “Donc , il faut une session extraordinaire d’ici la pour cela – – c qui est peu probable”. The declaration is approximately translated as: “Thus it needs an extra ordinary session (of the National Assembly) for that, and it is less probable”.
So the PCRN leadership did not completely rule out the possibility that the legislative and municipal elections could again be postpone at = this point, but said to do that, an extraordinary session of the National Assembly has to be convened before November 9, 2026, which is the latest date to convene electorates to the polls for the legislative and municipal elections, and which from their view of things is less probable.
State Coffer Is Empty
Meanwhile, a declaration by the Minister of Finance , Louis Paul Motaze, who is increasingly becoming blunt in his declarations these days, that the State Coffer is almost empty, has sparked fears in the opposition that the Biya or CPDM regime wants to postpone the legislative and municipal elections again. Some opposition officials even think that the declaration by the Minister of Finance, that the State has no money, is a strategy to prepare the minds of the Cameroonian people, for another postponement of the legislative and municipal elections. For one thing, the State cannot organize any election, if the funds needed to organize he election, is not available.
It would be recalled that the legislative and municipal elections that were supposed to hold in February 2025 were postponed, because the Government said that the State would not have enough money to organize the elections, and still be able to organize the presidential elections a few months later. It was the same excuse that was used by the Government to postpone the legislative and municipal elections in 2018.
Opposition Thinks It Is Another Pretext To Postpone Elections
But the Cameroon opposition has always accused the Biya or CPDM regime of using the claim that the State has financial constraint, as a pretext to postpone the legislative and municipal elections, to organize them at a time that best suits the ruling CPDM party. The declaration by the Minister of Finance that the State coffer is almost empty, or better still, that the State does not have money, was one of the topics of a political debate on Sunday, September 20, 2026 over Info TV in Yaounde , in the regular Sunday programme, “Libre Expression”. Opposition officials in the panel, all cried out that the regime is scheming to again postpone the legislative and municipal elections, which to them is inadmissible.
Though the declaration by the Minister of Finance, Louis Paul Motaze, that the State coffer is almost empty, or that the State has no money, was not made within a political context, it remains to be seen whether that declaration will affect the much expected legislative and municipal elections. The opposition however has to try to stay focus on the preparation for the much awaited legislative and municipal elections. As can be seen, the ruling CPDM has in the last two months or so, been intensifying preparations in the field for the legislative and municipal elections. That is a signal for the opposition to take seriously.
Cameroon Has Been Broke For Quite Sometimes Now
Meanwhile, the declaration by the Minister of Finance that the State Coffer is empty is in really not a surprise. Cameroon has because of the persistent bad governance of this regime, which includes huge embezzlement or public funds and looting of State resources, been broke for quite sometimes now. It is no secret that Cameroon which is a country blessed with abundant natural resources, is today a again a highly indebted poor country, even though the Government tries to downplay the total external and internal debts of the country, which is today over 15,000 billion francs CFA. Cameroon has in the last two or three years been surviving mostly on loans. The economic situation in the country has become so bad, because the Government is unable to pay internal debts, and so many local companies or enterprises that do business with the State or Government, and which are being owed huge sums of money by the State, are in big financial difficulties, because the Government is not paying internal debts.
The Minister of Finance these days is regularly out of the country, to negotiate for new loans for the country, including new loans to pay interests on foreign loans as we saw early this year with the Eurobonds loan deal in Europe. When a country gets to a stage that it has to borrow money to pay for interests on loans or money it owes, then things have become more than the word, bad, for that country.
Whatever the case, nothing stops this regime which has become a specialist in borrowing money in the name of our highly indebted poor country, to also borrow money to organize the legislative and municipal elections, which are important elections for the country.
