Sympathizers came in their numbers from far and wide on Saturday, May 3, 2025 to join the ENDU and NKEMNDENJI Families to bid farewell to Mrs ENDU nee Eunice ATEMAC FOMENKY, a staff of the Government Bilingual Technical High School, GBTHS Limbe in the Southwest Region of Cameroon, who passed away in a car accident on the Limbe – Mutengene highway while returning home after work on Friday, March 14, 2025.

The programme of the day started with the removal of the corpse of Mrs Endu nee Eunice Atem Fomenky who was popularly known by family members and close friends as EWAH ATEM, from the mortuary of Mount Mary Hospital Buea, from where mourners moved down to St ANDREW’s Catholic Church in Muea, for the funeral mass.

At Funeral Mass –  “Be Ready At All Times”

The first reading for the sermon at the funeral mass  was from the second book of Wisdom 3:1- 6 n 9, while the second reading was from 1 Cor. 15: 20 – 28. Then a reading from the holy Gospel according to John 14: 1 – 6. “Do not be worried and upset”, Jesus told them. “Believe(a) in God and believe also in me. 2 There are many rooms in my Father’s house, and I am going to prepare a place for you. I would not tell you this if it were not so. (b) 3 And after I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to myself, so that you will be where I am. 4 You know the way that leads to the place where I am going” 5 Thomas said to him: “Lord we do not know where you are going; so how can we know the way to get there?”. 6 Jesus answered him, “I am the way, the truth and the life; no one goes to the Father except by me”.

In a moving sermon at the funeral mass, Rev Father MESUE Vincent of St. ANDREW’S Catholic Church Muea, among other things stressed to Christians that death can come to any person at any time, and that it was not about age, but about the will of God – the Creator.  He strongly advised each and every Christian to be prepared all the time by living the life of a true Christian, for God can call any person at any time.

The Priest asserted that when one gets up in the morning, he or she has a plan for that day, but that what the person does not know is God’s own plan for him or her for that day. So the Priest, said, the fact is that when one gets up in the morning, he cannot say with certainty what will happen in the afternoon or evening of that day, for God alone knows. The Priest thus emphasized to Christians that as they live, they should strive to always prepare themselves as true Christians, and be ready at all times for God’s call, that can come at any time or on any day. Any time that God decides that your time is up, it is over for you on earth, no matter your age, no matter your wealth, no matter your status in the society. To  prepare yourself to  get to heaven and not to hell after you leave this earth, you have to as the child of God constantly strive to live according to the teachings of Jesus Christ, who is the way, the truth  and the life, and no one goes to the father except through him.

A Sermon That Marched The Event

Some of brothers, sisters and children of late Eunice

The sermon delivered by Rev Father Mesue Vincent could not have been any better. Mrs Endu nee Eunice Atemfac Fomenky left her home at Muea in the outskirt of Buea in the morning of Friday, March 14, 2025, and travelled to Limbe as usual for work. Nobody, including herself, could have imagined when she was leaving the house in the morning of that fateful day for work, that she would not return, that it was her last time of seeing her house and the family at home. Terrible!.

Even before leaving the house that morning, Eunice had a telephone conversation with her elder brother based in the United States of America, NKEM NDEHNJI PHILIP FOMENKY. Since it was getting late for her to leave for work, she told the elder that it was getting late for her,  and promised to call him in the evening when she returns from work, for them to finish their discussion.  But what neither Eunice nor her elder brother could have imagined, that their telephone discussion that morning, was the last time they were talking to each other. This life!

It should be noted  the elder brother of Eunice , that is US based  Philip  Fomenky, had also become her father in the African tradition, as their father passed away leaving Philip as the next –of – kin. He became Nkem Ndehnji Philip Fomenky.

It Was All Tears

Meanwhile Nkem Ndehnji Philip Fomenky who flew to Cameroon for the funeral of her junior sister and daughter, could not hold back the tears despite making all efforts to brave the situation as a man, when he took to the podium to talk on behalf of the family, at the funeral mass at St ANTHONY’S Catholic Church Muea.  Tears flowed when Philip said he could not understand how it could be, that it was instead him (the elder brother of Eunice), and their mother, having to bury Eunice. Unable to hold back the tears,  Nkem  Ndehnji Philip Fomenky smartly cut short what he had to say, and expressed the deep appreciation of the ENDU and NKEMNDENJI families to  friends, well –wishers or sympathizers  that turned up massively to join  the two families to bid farewell to Eunice.

It should be noted, that both at the funeral mass and the rest of funeral programme which took at the family residence at Muea, with the highlights being  the lying in state of the deceased and the burial, the atmosphere was charged with a lot of emotion. It was tears everywhere. Eunice did not only die young, but the death came so abruptly, so brutally. Eunice too was such a nice person, and that accounted for heavy turnout of sympathizers, who came from far and wide, including the local community (Muea).

ACADEMIC HNOURS

The entire staff and administration of Government Bilingual Technical High School Limbe, were in Muea on that May 3, 2025, to mourn their departed colleague, Mrs Endu nee Eunice Atemfac Fomenky. Certainly, non of  the colleagues, could have imagined when they separated with Mrs Endu after work on Friday, March 14, 2025, that they would never meet with her again . This life!  At the funeral on May 3, 2025, the staff of GBTHS Limbe also presented ACADEMIC HONOURS to their late colleague, Mrs Endu nee Eunice Atemfac Fomenky.

Social, Religious, Community And Cultural Groups

A community group going to the funeral of late Mrs Endu nee Eunice Atem Fomenky

Mrs Endu nee Eunice Atemfac Fomenky was a nice and sociable person, was also a member of quite a number of social, religious, community and cultural groups. Those groups all turned up to mourn her departure in their different ways. Members of the Kombone Youths Association for example, came massively from several branches, to bid farewell to the departed senor and dynamic member (Eunice). In their traditional ways of doing things at the funeral of one of their committed member, they association came with their brass band, trumpets and other instruments. Some other groups also came along with their drums and other instruments.

A spokesperson of the family of the deceased, in addressing mourners at the family residence after the  Church service, explained that in their tradition, when somebody dies the way Eunice did, that is in an accident, there  is playing of drums or dancing at the funeral. But he said the family was faced with the reality of the situation before them, considering that many groups to which Eunice belonged turned up with drums, bands, flutes,  gongs,  trumpets, and so on,  to  mourn her, the way they always do when one of committed members, passes away. He said also considering the fact that the family which was so shaken with the sudden death of Eunice, could not remember to notify groups that indicated they were to come to the funeral about their tradition, the  family thus would just let things go. So each of the  groups  mourned Eunice in the way they usually mourn a the passing away of a committed member.

A  Kind Weather

As is also the tradition in Africa, funerals end with entertainment. Despite the heavy turnout at the funeral of Mrs Endu nee Eunice Atemfac Fomenky, the food and drinks that were provided by the families were really much more than enough.

Also, the weather too was very kind to the funeral of Mrs Endu nee Eunice Atemfac Fomenky. Though it rained several times across Buea Sub –division that week, though the weather looked dull that morning of Saturday, May 3, it did not rain, and the rest of day was bright.  It was as if the weather was appreciating the fact that Eunice was a nice person.

TRIBUTE BY THE MOTHER OF LATE MRS  ENDU  nee EUNICE ATEM FOMENKY

Mama Susanna Nkemndenji (middle), mother of late Eunice

“Eshuo Ngeih, Nwoh Essewen Atemfac. Where are you my beloved daughter? Don’t tell me that what I am hearing is true because for a long time now, I haven’t seen you or heard from you. During our last conversation, you told me that you want to further you studies, and that you were also planning to buy a car. After all that you planned, you suspended everything and left so soon.

You gave me the utmost encouragement as a child by doing well in school, proving to me that my work did not go in vain, and now where is the result? Where are you my dear and beloved daughter? I remember how you used to tell me that during my demise, you will honor me by giving me a crown like Queen Elizabeth. Where did you keep the crown? To whom did you hand the crown to wear on me when my own day comes, so as to fulfill your plan? Who did you leave behind to take care of? Therese, your first daughter, your all and all.  After organizing her wedding and everything went well, you departed without telling her a word.

You were such a loving and caring child. I thought I would stay long because of your love and care, but since you decided to quit the stage so soon, I don’t know how long I am going to live again. God, however, knows best. Rest well, go well my daughter, and prepare a place where we will meet to part no more”.

Safe Journey My Dear Sister

I am still in fantasy and still to come to terms with your shocking and untimely death. You and I spoke that morning when you were leaving the house for work. You cut short the phone call on the grounds that you were running late. You promised me that when you return, you were going to give me more updates. While at work, you sent me two voice messages relating to our discussion. You still emphasized on calling me when you get home. But then!  You never reached home.

You played an immeasurable role in the family; assisting and taking care of your mom, brothers and sisters, and their children. You have left a vacuum that no one,  I repeat and emphasized, NO ONE is going to fill. But since it is the will of God and our ancestors that you join them, I can only say go in peace and remember us to our father, to Mami Tere and others in the family who went before you.  And since you could not have a safe journey on earth on your way from work, I am now wishing you a very safe journey to the world beyond.

May Your Soul Continue To Rest In Perpetual Peace”
