The Charges Leveled Against Them Include Rebellion, Propagation Of False Information, Illegal Gathering, Among Others.  Several Legal Minds Consider The Charges Highly Controversial.  The Case That Opened On Thursday, January 8, 2026, Amidst High Tension, Was Postponed To February 12. The President Of The Cameroon Bar Council, MBAH ERIC MBAH, Has, Mobilized A Team Of Lawyers, To Defend The 142 Indicted Persons, ‘Pro Bono”, That Is, For Free.

A total of 142 persons are on the first list of persons that have been indicted by the Examining Magistrate at the Yaounde Military Tribunal, to stand trial for alleged criminal or illegal acts they allegedly committed in the recent post –election crisis, or better still, the crisis that rocked Cameroon after the October 12, 2025 presidential election over the hotly contested result.

It should be noted that the post-election crisis or conflict in Cameroon, erupted from the fact that one of the presidential candidates of the opposition, Issa Tchiroma Bakary, the National President of FSNC and former member of Government, and who indisputably had wide support across the country, declared himself winner of the October 12, 2025 presidential election,  and called on the population to defend their votes or their victory.  Tchiroma’s supporters insisted that he won the election, and accused the CPDM regime of stolen victory.

The 142 Persons Were All Arrested In Yaounde

Meanwhile, the 142 persons are among those that were arrested in the nation’s capital, Yaounde.  And so the reasons for their arrest, as well as why they are facing  trial, have to  do with acts that were allegedly  committed in Yaounde.

It should be noted that there are some persons, including politicians like Djaeukam Tchameni, that were arrested in some parts of the country like Douala and Garoua , moved to Yaounde, and are currently on pre-trial detention at the Kondengui Prison,  but who are not on that that  first list.  Even a politician (party leader) like Parfait Mbvom, who  was in Issa Tchiroma Bakary’s  national campaign team for the October 12, 2025 presidential, and who   was arrested in Yaounde, and is currently on pre-trial detention at the Kondengui Prison,  also not that first list of 142. They are said to be belong to a different category.

Meanwhile the names on the list of the 142 persons whose trial have started, and who are predominantly youths, are contained in a communiqué which  a  renowned human rights lawyer, Hippolyte  Takouang  Meli, former President of the  General Assembly of the Cameroon Bar Association, issued on Wednesday,  January 7, 2025. He did this ahead of the start of the trial on Thursday, January 8, 2025, at the Yaounde Military Tribunal.  According to the communiqué, the 142 persons on that first list are actually in into subcategories.  114 of the 142 persons are, on pre-trial detention at the Yapunde Central Prison commonly known as Kondengui, while the 28 others are not on pre-trial detention, and thus will be appearing in the trial from their homes.  Barrister Meli said in the release that the decision was taken by the Examining Magistrate at the Yaounde Military Tribunal.

Charges Against The Indicted Persons

According to press release that was issued by Barrister Meli, a number of charges have been leveled against the 142 persons which include:  Propagation of False Information (Fake news), Rebellion (in a group), as well as Illegal Gathering or Unlawful Assembly.    He said these charges are treated in Section 72 – 2, 113, 157 -1b, 158, 232 -1 and 2, of the Cameroon Penal Code.    One other charge is the absence of the National Identity Card, meaning that some of the indicted persons did not have the National Identity Card.  That fault is treated in Section 1.5 of Law No. 90/042 of 19 December 1990. Also worth noting that according Barrister Meli, the indictments of the total of 142 persons whose trial opened at the Yaounde Military Tribunal on January 8, 2025, belong to a total of five case files.

It should  be noted that there was no destruction, looting,  and  burning in  the post –election crisis in the nation’s capital, Yaounde, unlike  like happened  in  the nation’s economic capital, Douala, and a number of  other towns  like Garoua, Dschang,  Batouri,  Maroua  among others, there were no acts of vandalism, looting and arson in  the nation’s capital, Douala.

Charges Considered   Very Controversial

Meanwhile, several legal minds, have considered the charges leveled against the 142 persons whose trial has started at the Yaounde Military Tribunal, to be very controversial.   The legal minds are questioning for example, how somebody can be dragged to a military court and changed for rebellion, simply for taking part in a post – election protest demonstration, in a country whose leadership claims to embrace democracy.  Somebody is dragged to the military court and charged for alleged propagation of false information, of not being in position of the National Identity Card, or for allegedly participating in an illegal gathering, precisely a protest demonstration. Terrible! It looks like any little thing that somebody commits in Cameroon now, is a matter for the military court.

As aforementioned, there was no act of vandalism, looting, or arson in Yaounde, during the post –election  crisis in the country.

The 142 Persons Are Predominantly Moslems

Meanwhile, as can be l seen on the list of 142 persons on the first list of those to stand trial at the Yaounde Military Tribunal, in relation to the post –election crisis in the nation’s capital, they are curiously enough, predominantly of the Moslem Community.   In fact almost all of them are Moslems, looking at the names.  Authorities are however arguing that there is nothing surprising about it, because post –election protest demonstrations and acts of violence in Yaounde, was limited to the Briqueterie area, which is the main quarter of members of the Moslem Community in Yaounde.

Bar Council President Mobilizes A Group Of Defence Lawyers

Meanwhile, a few days before the case against the 142 persons started a the Yaounde Military Tribunal, the President of the Cameroon, Bar Council, Batonnier  Mbah Eric Mbah,  personally chaired  a meeting at the headquarters of the Cameroon  Bar Association in Yaounde, to mobilize a group of human rights lawyers  to defend  the indicted persons, who are predominantly from poor homes. The mobilization was done by the Bar Council President, with the collaboration of the prominent human rights lawyer, Barrister Hippolyte  Meli, who had been  following the file for long. The mobilization by the Bar Council President put together a group of lawyers, willing to defend the accused or indicted persons, Pro Bono, that is, for free.

Case Kicks Off On January 8, And Is Postponed To February 12.

Meanwhile the trial of the 142 persons opened at the Yaounde Military Tribunal as was scheduled, on Thursday, January 8, 2026. But the focus on that day was on the 114 persons on pre-trial detention at the Kondengui Prison.  The group of lawyers who had opted  to defend  the indicted persons Pro Bono, was interestingly enough, led  by the President of the  Bar Council, Batonnier Mhah Eric Mhah, in person.  The case took off on a very tense note, as the team of defence lawyers questioned the competence of the Military Court to handle issues related to post election crisis, which are political. They insisted that the 114 persons on that first list of 142, incarcerated at Kondengui Prison, be immediately liberated.  As expected, the Prosecution Bench  at the Yaounde Military Tribunal, would not accepted that, They insisted that the Military Court was competent to handle the case, because the charges for example included  Rebellion Against State Institutions, which also means, Insurrection, which is a serious criminal act,  and not simple politics.

Tension mounted in the courtroom, as some of the indicted persons, and their family members that turned up in court, rejected the accusations or charges leveled against them as fake.  One of the indicted persons,  cried out  in court that he was actually at his business place at the  Mokolo  Market in Yaounde,  when to his greatest embarrassment and shock,  a group of security  men turned up and  arrested  for what he did not know.

The Yaounde Military Tribunal adjourned the case to February 12, 2025.
