Meme SDO, Ntou’ou Ndong Chamberlin, Informs Population Of The Outbreak Of An Epidemic In Kumba

 Meme SDO, NTOU’OU NDONG Chamberlin, has in a release (Ref. G. 39/SAAjP04/2025), Informed the population of his Division in general and Kumba in particular, that there has been an outbreak of an epidemic known as SCHISTOSOMIASIS, in a number of quarters in Kumba. The quarters include: Tancha, Ntam I, II III, Mahole, Mabanda I and II, Pung – Pung, Nshie – Nshie (Kosala II and V), and Pulletin.

The SDO has explained that the disease manifests itself in an infected person through bloody urine, itchy body, diarrhea among others, and that a human being gets infected when he comes in contact with water from streams or rivers infected by the worms that cause the disease.  The most vulnerable age group to the epidemic is said to be children below 14.

The Meme SDO has thus warned the population of Kumba against swimming, bathing or drinking from streams and rivers in the municipality, and has urged any person infected by the disease to immediately go to the nearest health facility. He has assured the population that   medical personnel under the various District Medical Officers are working hard “to neutralize the pathogens of that disease”.

Meanwhile all visitors to Kumba are thus warned to be very careful with the quality of water they drink, as well as the source of the water they use to bath.

BELOW IS THE PUBLIC ANNOUNCEMENT, MADE BY THE SDO OF MEME, IN ITS ENTIRETY:

“The Senior Divisional Officer for Meme Division informs the general population of the Meme Division and Kumba in particular, that there has been a SCHISTOSOMIASIS Epidemic broke out in the communities of Tancha, Ntam I, II and III, Mahole, Mabanda I and II, Pung – Pung, Nshie – Nshie (Kosala II and V) and Pulletin quarters.

The said disease manifests itself through bloody urine, itchy body, diarrhea etc, after one gets in contact with water from some streams and rivers infected by the worms responsible for the disease. It is known to attack mostly children below ages of fourteen (14).

In order to stop the propagation of the said disease, the Prefect of Meme invites all traditional and religious authorities, the education community, parents and guardians (to sensitize children) and the entire population, to immediately stop swimming, bathing and drinking from streams and rivers in Kumba.

In the same vein, the population of Kumba is invited not to panic, as the medical personnel under the authority of the various District Medical Officers are working hard to neutralize the pathogens of that disease.

The Senior Divisional Officer therefore urges all persons infected to report to the nearest health facility where, adequate measures and treatment are being put in place to take care of the situation”.
