European Union Delegation In Cameroon, Once More Calls For The Liberation Of All Persons Arrested Arbitrary Since The October 12 Presidential Election.
The former President of the General Assembly of the Cameroon Bar Association, Barrister HIPPOLYTE MELI TAKOUANG, who was the lead defense lawyer of the National President of MANIDEM, EKANE ANICET GEORGES, who died in Gendarmerie custody in Yaounde on Monday, December 1, 2025, has disclosed that for the over one month that EKANE was in detention, he was neither presented to a judge, nor was he indicted for any crime or fault. “President Ekane died in illegal detention, on judicial statute unknown by the Law of the Republic”, Barrister Meli added in a social media post on that fateful Monday, December 1, 2025, that his client, Ekane Anicet, who was in detention, passed away at the Military Medical Centre of the National Gendarmerie.
Barrister Meli disclosed that when Ekane Anicet was arrested with Djeukam Tchameni in Douala on October 24, 2025, taken to Yaounde and detained at the Gendarmerie Headquarters commonly known by the French acronym, SED, they were initially scheduled to meet the Examining Magistrate at the Yaounde Military Court on October 31, 2025. Several other detainees at SED in relation to the post – election crisis, were also supposed to meet Examining Magistrate at the Yaounde Military Tribunal. But Ekane was finally not received on that October 31. Up till the day that Ekane passed away, he had not met the Examining Magistrate or any State Prosecutor at the Yaounde Military Tribunal.
Those Provoking A National Revolt

Barrister Meli said for the over one month that Ekane Anicet was in detention in Yaounde, only two senior military officers interrogated him once. He said the two were Colonel BIALO DIEUDONNE, and Captain OTELE of SCRJ. He revealed that in declaration that was recorded by the two senior military officers, Ekane said he had an issue with only three persons in the country, whom he said were provoking a national revolt (“Trois Provocateurs de la Revolte National”). Barrister Meli said the first name that Ekane mentioned was PAUL ATANGA NJI, the Minister of Territorial Administration. The second name was CLEMENT ATANGANA, the President of the Constitutional Council. And the third name was PAUL BIYA, whom Ekane referred to as the main rival of his candidate (Issa Tchiroma Bakary), at the October 12, 2025 presidential election.
Barrister Meli said in the declaration, Ekane Anicet had expressed is wish to sit down face to face with the three “provocateurs of national revolt”, for a discussion. He said Ekane strongly advised the military and the judiciary, to stay out of politics for the interest of the fatherland. “Le President Ekane Anicet Georges n’a pas besoin de nos larmes , la ou il se trove. Il est mort pour la Republique”, that is, “President Ekane Anicet Georges does not need our tears, where he is. He has died for the Republic”, Barrister Meli concluded his social media post.
European Union Delegation Reacts To Ekane’s Death
Meanwhile, the European Union Delegation in Cameroon, and Equatorial Guinea, was one of the several institutions and organizations that promptly reacted to the dead in detention on Monday, December 1, 2025, of the veteran opposition figure in Cameroon, Ekane Anicet Georges. In a release on Monday, December 1, 2025, the European Union Delegation said it was with deep sorrow that they learnt of the death of the Ekane Anicet, the President of MANIDEM, who was in detention following his arrest on October 24, 2025. The European Union Delegation noted that Ekane was a committed politician, and was on the frontline of democratic pluralism since the 90s, and that his death has left a vacuum in public debate in Cameroon.
The European Union Delegation said they had taken note of the communiqué by the Ministry of Defence which announced the opening of an enquiry, to establish with precision, the circumstances of the death of Ekane Anicet.
The European Union Delegation recalled with insistence, the declaration that was made by the Spokesperson of the European Union on October 28, 2025, related notably to the necessity to guarantee the security and physical integrity of all political actors, ensure justice, and fight against the excessive resort to violence, and violations of human rights.
The European Union Delegation once more called on the Cameroonian authorities to liberate all persons in detention, arbitrary arrested since the October 12, 2025 presidential election.
Autopsy Postponed

Meanwhile, in another post on social media in the afternoon of Tuesday, December 2, 2025, Barrister Hippolyte Meli Takouang, disclosed that the autopsy that was programmed to be done at the mortuary of Yaounde Central Hospital as from 10 am , did not take place, as late Ekane Anicet’s family demanded for a postponement. He explained that the Ekane family rightly wants a situation where they will bring in their own medical doctors, to accompany the doctors that the government or the hospital will designate to carry out the autopsy, on the corpse of their deceased love one. He said the autopsy will thus take place later, on a date yet to be fixed.
Meanwhile, it is ironical that when Ekane Anicet was at the Military Medical Centre of the National Gendarmerie, he pleaded in vain that he should be moved to the Yaounde Central Hospital, because it is better equipped, and thus could better handle his complicated and degenerating health situation. But then when he died, they moved his corpse to the mortuary of the Yaounde Central Hospital, where the autopsy could take place, because the hospital is better equipped.
