A complete list of the National Executive Bureau, the Chapter Presidents, National Advisers, National Representatives in the Diaspora, and the Council of Elders
The day was Saturday, and the date was July 29, 2023, while the event was the Handing Over Ceremony by the Outgoing National Executive Bureau of the Besongabang Elements’ Cultural and Development Association, BECDA (Nchemti Bechokoh Boh Besongabang), to the incoming National Executive Bureau. The venue of the grand event, which was also attended by representatives of the different Branches of BECDA, in the country, was the BECDA Douala Branch Meeting Hall at Bonaberi (Douala IV).
Worth noting that the new National Executive Bureau of BECDA headed by Nfor EYONG ERIC AGBOR, Lieutenant in the Cameroon military based in Yaounde, was elected into office at the General Assembly Meeting of BECDA which was held in Limbe, on Saturday, May 27, 2023. The Outgoing National Executive Bureau of BECDA headed by Nfor Dr ASSAM GEORGE of Help Medical Foundation Bonaberi, Douala, had been in office since 2006 and strenuously defied several odds to push forward the lofty mission of BECDA. The Nfor Dr Assam-led team last year proposed that a new team of Besongabang sons and daughters of the younger generation should take over the baton of leadership of BECDA. Worthy of note that, Nfor in Besongabang, is a traditional title of honourability.

Besongabang Youths Of Today, Are Tomorrow’s Leaders
Interestingly enough, Lt Nfor Eyong Eric Agbor, who was elected as the new National President of BECDA during the General Assembly Meeting of the Association that was held in Limbe on May 27, 2023, was the National Youth President of BECDA for 15 years. Having been groomed in leadership by the elders, he has now been handed over the post of National President of BECDA.
Also, the new National Secretary General of BECDA, ESONG TAMBONG GODFRED ARREY, of the Limbe Branch of BECDA, is a young man. The Besongabang Elements’ Cultural and Development Association has thus actually taught others the practical lessons of the true meaning of the saying that the youths of today are the leaders of tomorrow, that others take for a mere slogan.

BECDA Douala Branch Is A Third Class Chiefdom
Meanwhile, as earlier indicated, the BECDA Douala Branch Hall in Bonaberi (Douala IV) served as the venue, of the Handing Over Ceremony by the Outgoing National Executive Bureau of BECDA headed by Nfor Dr Assam George, to the Incoming Bureau headed by Lt Nfor Eyong Eric Agbor, on Saturday, July 29, 2023.
In his welcome address, the Douala Branch President of BECDA, Nfor ECHU EGBE DEAN, said the Branch was created way back in the 1970s. He disclosed that the Doulala Branch of BECDA has been classified as a Third Decree Chiefdom, and that the Wouri SDO had officially installed Sesekou Nfor NATHANIEL TAKOR, as Third Class Chief.
The Douala Branch President also took the opportunity to present the newly constructed meeting hall of the Branch, explaining that the project has caused so much financial strain to some concerned members that have individually sacrificed so much, as well as the Douala Branch of BECDA itself that has been forced to suspend some of its activities to direct all their little funds to the building project. They had to buy the piece of land, and have managed to finish the construction of the ground floor of the storey building project. Nfor Echu said the building is not the property of the Douala Branch of BECDA alone, but that it is the property of Besongabang.

“Geopolitically, Besongabang Is Supposed To Be A Sub-division”
The Outgoing National President of BECDA, Nfor Dr Assam George, who also welcomed members of the Association and the media to the Handing-over Ceremony, made a brief presentation of Besongabang which is one the most populated chiefdoms in Mamfe Sub-Division, Manyu Division in the Southwest Region of Cameroon. He said Besongabang has a population of over 20, 000 people, and opined that “geopolitically, Besongbang is supposed to be a Sub-division”.
Nfor Dr Assam disclosed that Besongbang was the first seat of the Basal Mission West of the Mungo in Cameroon, and it was later that the Basel Mission extended to the ‘grassfield”, precisely to Bali Nyonga and Bafut. He as well disclosed that the first Church House was built in Besongabang way back in 1904. He explained that it is for this reason that Besongabang people are generally Christians of the Presbyterian Church in Cameroon, PCC.
Dr Assam recalled that one of the first projects that the National Executive Bureau of BECDA which he headed realized when they came to office in 2006, was to initiate the construction of a new Church House in Besongabang with a sitting capacity of over 2500 worshippers, which is the biggest Church House in the Manyu Division. He said some funds came from some non-BECDA members. “But the PCC House was the brainchild of BECDA”. Worth noting that Nfor Dr Assaam who is a highly devoted Christian of the PCC, is the Chairman of Presbyterian Church Bonaberi Congregation in Douala.

Culture Of Sending Children To School
Nfor Dr Assam explained that the early settlement of the Basel Mission in Besongabang, opened the village much earlier to education as compared to other areas in the country. He said as a result of that, Besongabang parents developed the culture to send their children to school much earlier, and that the culture has lived on till date. He said this accounts for the reason why Besongabang is a highly ‘scholarised’ community. Remember the famous PSS now PHS Besongabang! Nfor Dr Assam recalled for example that a son of Besongabang, Henry Ndifor Abi, who later became Chief Dr Enonchong Henry Ndifor Abi, graduated from George Town University in the United States in 1964.
The Outgoing National President as well disclosed that the Besongabang Elements’ Cultural and Development Association was created way back in 1974 in Bamenda, in the then Northwest Province. This means that BECDA will be 50 next year.

“WHO WE ARE”
Meanwhile, the Handing Over Note of the Outgoing National Executive Bureau of BECDA to the Incoming Bureau, was read at the occasion by the Outgoing Secretary General of the Association, Nfor EBAI MAXWELL MBI. The preamble of the Handing Over Notes which was quite interesting, gave a summary of who members of BECDA humbly consider themselves to be.
The preamble of the Handing Over Note read as follows: “We, the sons and daughters of Besongabang Town who are members of Besongabang Elements Cultural and Development Association – BECDA (Nchemti Bechokoh Boh Besongabang), residing within the Republic of Cameroon and Diaspora, BOUND BY A COMMON ORIGIN and ANCESTRY; – Having a COMMON CULTURAL HERITAGE either by BLOOD, MARRIAGE or ASSOCIATION; – Conscious of the NEED TO PRESERVE OUR CHERISHED UNITY, and THE NEED TO PRESERVE THE UNITY AND CULTURE within the broad context of the AYUK TAYAK Clan, BANYANG Tribe and MANYU Culture and Traditions and Unity in Cultural diversity; Met today Saturday, July 29, 2023, at the Besongabang Hall in Bonaberi, Douala, for the handing over ceremony to the new National Executive Bureau members elected during the General Assembly Meeting of Saturday, May 27, 2023, at Limbe 1 Council Hall in the presence of 296 members from 8 Branches in attendance”.

Outgoing National Bureau Suffered Severe Challenges
Meanwhile, it was indicated in the report that was read by the Outgoing Secretary General of BECDA, Nfor Ebai Maxwell, that members of the Outgoing National Executive Bureau of BECDA headed by Nfor Dr Assam George that were elected into office in 2006, faced or suffered quite several severe challenges. One of the major challenges was that the Nfor Dr Assam – National Executive Bureau took over BECDA “without a franc in the treasury”. Worse again was the fact that the Association was heavily indebted.
As if those were not enough troubles for the BECDA National Executive Bureau headed by Nfor Dr Assaam George, came 2008 the shocking news of the passing away of the Traditional Ruler of Besongabang, Chief Dr Enonchong Henry Ndifor. The death was really a bombshell to BECDA, considering that Chief Dr Enonchong who was an international legal consultant and multimillionaire, was the Patron of BECDA.

Deaths of Some Key Members Of The Exco
“Then followed the deaths of some key members of the National Executive Bureau of BECDA like Late Mr Denis Enonchong of Yaounde, Late Mr Takang William Enow of Buea, Late Dr Ayuk Tekem Jacob of Yaounde, Late Mr James Ako Egbe, Late Ayuk Titus Nkongho of Tiko / Mutengene, Late Mr Tom Tabi Oben, and recently Late Oben Michael Oben, among others”, the report stated. At this point, a minute of silence was observed at the meeting, in memory of the departed members.
The report further stated that though most of the late officials of BECDA were replaced, the problem of vacant posts resurfaced in another way, as several key officials of BECDA left the country for greener pastures abroad. The National Financial Secretary of BECDA, Eyongasu Law, of Kumba, on his part reportedly left the association without a word to the National Executive Bureau. “We were left with only a few National Executive members to manage the affairs of the Association till last May 27, 2023”, the report by the Outgoing National Executive Committee Bureau disclosed, indicating some of the numerous difficulties that the National Executive Bureau of BECDA confronted.

Then Came The Anglophone Crisis In 2016
Also in 2016, the Anglophone Crisis showed its ugly face and escalated in 2017. The two English-speaking regions in the country, that is the Northwest and Southwest Regions, were seriously affected by the crisis, with activities brought to a standstill. BECDA activities in Besongabang and other towns in the Northwest and Southwest Regions in particular, were thus seriously affected, as things were forced into a standstill.
Then again came the COVID-19 pandemic in early 2020. COVID-19 also known as Coronavirus, was a pandemic that had a global impact on all socio-economic activities and others.

“Branches Are The Engine Of The Association“
Meanwhile, the outgoing BECDA National Executive Bureau led by Nfor Dr Assam George, lauded the Branches of the Association, including the Diaspora, for the roles they played to keep BECDA buoyant and functional, in the face of all the challenges. ‘All credits for the successes of the Association depend on the functionality of the Branches, including the Diaspora. We urge the new team to continue to put the Branches’ activities as their priority, knowing that they are the engine of the Association”, the Outgoing National Executive Bureau, advised the incoming team headed by Lt Nfor Eyong Eric Agbor.
“On the Association’s relationship with activities at home in Besongabang, we had continued with the foundation laid down by our Ancestors and Patriarchs on the leadership based on a ROTATORY succession pattern to the throne of Besongabang chiefdom, and urge the new team of the Association not to depart from these PRINCIPLES WHICH ARE ON LOVE FOR ONE ANOTHER, UINTY AMONG BOH ABANE AND BOH ETCHU FAMILY GROUPS, and the DEVELOPMENT OF BESONGABANG on a participatory approach”, the Outgoing National Executive Bureau further advised the Incoming Bureau.

Efforts To Bring Back Breakaway Faction
The Outgoing National President of BECDA Nfor Dr Assam George, as well as the Handing Over Notes read by the Outgoing Secretary General, Nfor Ebai Maxwell Mbi, at the July 29, 2023 ceremony, did not talk about a very serious challenge that their National Executive Bureau faced from the very first day of their election to office in 2006. The issue was however mentioned in their reports at the General Assembly Meeting that was held in Limbe on May 27, 2023.
What happened was that before the Nfor Dr Assam-headed National Executive Bureau was elected in 2006 to lead BECDA, some Nkeng members, had broken away from the Association and created a rival association known as Besongabang Development Association, BDA. The problem had to do with the chieftaincy dispute as some Nkeng members challenged the legitimacy of Chief Dr HNA Enonchong as the Traditional Ruler of Besongabang. Since the Chief was the Patron of BECDA, the dissidents did not thus want to be part of the Association.
The 2006 Elective General Assembly Meeting of BECDA which was supposed to hold at OIC in Buea, was prohibited from holding at that venue at the last minute by the DO of Buea, certainly under the influence of the dissident group. It was a big embarrassment to BECDA. Suffice to say that the General Assembly Meeting ended up holding in the premises of Sesekou Major Nyenty in Buea. The Nfor Dr Assam headed the National Executive Bureau of BECDA and thus came to office within the backdrop of a very complicated situation of a bitter rivalry between BECDA and the dissident group, and in their quest for peace and unity among all Besongbang people were forced to spend a lot of time and even personal resources struggling to negotiate a reconciliation deal to bring back the dissidents into BECDA.

Stewardship Report Was Presented At General Assembly Meeting
As indicated at the beginning of this report, the July 29, 2023 event in Douala was the formal handing over ceremony by the Outgoing National Executive Bureau of BECDA, to the Incoming National Executive Bureau, whose members were democratically elected at the General Assembly of the Association which held in Limbe on May 27, 2023. It was thus not an occasion for the Outgoing National Executive Bureau led by Nfor Dr Assam George to present the report of their stewardship for the period they were in office. That report was presented at the General Assembly Meeting of the BECDA. And as the Outgoing Secretary General, Nfor Ebai Maxwell Mbi rightly recalled, what the outgoing team was able to achieve, as outlined in the stewardship report that the Bureau presented during the General Assembly of BECDA that was held in Limbe on Saturday, May 27, 2023.

Some Of The Several Achievements
However, a glance at the Stewardship Report that was presented at the General Assembly Meeting in Limbe on May 27, 2023, by the Outgoing National Secretary General of BECDA, shows that the Outgoing National Executive Bureau headed by Nfor Dr Assam George achieved quite a lot, despite the very serious challenges they faced. For example during their tenure of office, BECDA in the quest for a sustainable water supply system initiated the Tafoloko Water Supply Scheme from Kembong, BECDA also sponsored feasibility studies of the Anu Road Project when they applied to SOWEDA through the Mamfe Council. The road project has been completed and handed over to the Village Council.
Worth adding, that the initiative and sponsorship for the creation of the Presbyterian Health Centre, was the brainchild of BECDA. The Association also took charge of street lighting when the electricity supply was regular, and electricity was also extended. In the cultural domain, BECDA has involved the organisation of Cultural Weeks in Besongabang. BECDA also regularly accompanied the Besongabang Village Traditional Council, in their numerous development efforts at any time they made a request.
In fact, BECDA carried out projects or activities in many domains that affect the lives of the people in Besongabang. Last year, for example, BECDA among other things supplied improved maize, egusi and watermelon seeds to the Besongabang people worth 700,000 francs CFA. In fact from all indications, Dr Assam’s team, despite the several hurdles or challenges, succeeded to do quite a lot.
In their Handing Over Notes on July 29, 2023, the Outgoing National Executive Bureau of BECDA humbly said: “Our wish is that this new team, should do even better than the outgoing team”.
Transparent Financial Accounts
Meanwhile, at the Handing Over Ceremony on July 29, 2023, the Outgoing National Executive Bureau of BECDA headed by Nfor Dr Assam George, formally handed over to the Incoming National Executive Bureau headed by Lt Nfor Eyong Eric Agbor, items that included: 1) The National President‘s files comprising some few important documents of the Association and the Association’s seal stamp. 2) The Secretary General’s national files comprise some essential documents as well as information on some major challenges that the new Bureau will have to tackle. 3) The National Financial Secretary’s files including the recent financial statement of the Association’s account. 4) The National Treasurer’s files including some important financial transactions at the national treasury and the money in her keeping. It was disclosed that the Outgoing National Treasurer of BECDA, Nfor Mrs Eyere Takor, has been out of the country for a while.
“Considering that she is presently out of the country, the proceeds during the last General Assembly Meeting were already handed to the Incoming National Treasurer, Mrs Ashu Agnes Baroh, to the amount of One million and sixty-three thousand (1,063,000)francs CFA. The balance in the keeping of the Outgoing National Treasurer, Nfor Mrs Eyere Takor, to the amount of 513,000 FCFA, shall be handed to the new National Treasurer upon her return soonest. Upon instruction of the National President, Nfor Dr Assam George, the monies are lodged in the BECDA Limbe bank account, where it is safe”, stated the Handing Over Note of the Outgoing National Executive Bureau headed by Nfor Dr Assam George, which was applauded for their transparent financial record.

He also congratulated the incoming National President of the Association, Lt Nfor Eyong Eric Agbor, and his team, for their brilliant elections that took place at the General Assembly Meeting in Limbe on May 27, 2023.

Outgoing Team Pledges Unconditional Support To New Bureau
At the end of the signing of the Handing Over Note, the Outgoing National President of BECDA, Nfor Dr Assam George, formally handed over the files to the new National President of the Association, Lt Nfor Eyong Eric Agbor. On behalf of the members of the outgoing National Executive Bureau, Nfor Dr Assam pledged unconditional support to the new Bureau, and assured that they will be available at any moment there may be a need, to guide and counsel the new team towards achieving their objectives, in the interest of BECDA.

Work For Unity, Peace And Development
Addressing the meeting after formally taking over office as the new National President of the Besongabang Elements’ Cultural and Development Association, Lt Nfor Eyong Eric Agbor, once more expressed gratitude to members of BECDA, for the confidence or trust they bestowed in him, by electing him as the National President of the Association at the General Assembly Meeting that held in Limbe on May 27, 2023. “Thank you all for having faith in me, and above all I thank God. I assure you people that I will strive to live up to expectations, and I count on God to accompany me in this task s”, he said.
Lt Nfor Eyong ric Agbor recalled that he was BECDA’s National Youth President for 15 years, during which period he acquired experience, learning from the elders. He explained that his team has not come to create a new BECDA, but to continue from where their predecessors ended. He hailed the outgoing team headed by Nfor Dr Assam, for all they were able to do for BECDA, and thus Besongabang, despite the several challenges they faced.
The new National President of BECDA stressed the importance of unity, peace and development, saying that his team will continue from where the outgone team ended, to work for the promotion of the spirit of love, unity, peace and development among the sons and daughters of Besongabang, under the umbrella of BECDA.

“One Village, One People”
The new National President BECDA emphasized the fact that Besongabang Village is one family and that the sons and daughters of the village thus have to strive at all times to live as one family. “There should be no discrimination amongst the sons and of Besongabang. Whether big or small, old or young, poor or rich, we are one. One Village, One People”, Lt Nfor Eyong Eric Agbor prayed.
The new BECDA President asserted that the foundation that was laid by their forefathers for Besongabang and its people was that of love, unity and peace among all sons and daughters of the chiefdom, for generations and generations to come. He urged all sons and daughters of Besongabang, whether young or old, to always bear in mind that they have the responsibility to strive to keep alive that flame and spirit that the forefathers laid down as the foundation of the village – love, unity and peace. He further urged all Besongabang sons and daughters to maintain an open-door policy in receiving their fellow brothers and sisters of the village.

Importance Of Team Work
Reiterating his zeal and deamination to work for the better development of Besongabang, the new BECDA leader assured their village, Besongabang, that the best is yet to come. He launched a call for all sons and daughters of Besongabang to strive to be active members of BECDA, as well as to support the new National Elective Bureau, for the interest of their village and people. He thus urged all sons and daughters of Besongabang to put their hands on deck for the development of their beloved village.
The new President of BECDA assured that his team will work to strengthen the relationship between the National Executive Bureau and the Branches and other organs of the Association, including the Diaspora. Turning to members of the new National Executive Bureau of BECDA, Lt Nfor Eyong Eric Agbor stressed the importance of teamwork, and called on every one of them to strive to nurture the spirit of teamwork, that is, team spirit.

We have a saying in our dialect that the people behind you, make you sit comfortably”, he asserted.
Hear Dr Assam further: “In all humility, I think that I am happy. I am happy because we had a key objective, which was to work to bring the Bessongabang people together. UNITY IS THE GREATEST THING THAT CAN BE ACHIEVED WHEN YOU ARE LEADING THE PEOPLE. If we or BECDA is here today, it is because, despite the several challenges we faced, we did not relent. We kept pushing on, we kept on trying to talk to our brothers and sisters to join us in this world of unity, peace and development for our beloved village and people, called the Besongabang Elements’ Cultural and Development Association”. He reemphasised their slogan of, “ONE VILLAGE, ONE PEOPLE”.
