The Lawyers And EKANE Family Refer To The Controversial Autopsy, As Another Provocation By The Regime, And  Mince No Words That They Will Not Recognize It.

British High Commission Has  Urged The Cameroonian Authorities To Ensure That The Investigation Into The Circumstances Of The Death In Custody, Of Veteran Opposition Leader, EKANE ANICET, “Is Conducted Thoroughly And Transparently”

Late Ekane Anicet Georges

The Mentor News reported on Tuesday, December 2, 2025, that an autopsy which the Yaounde Military Court, definitely on the directive or instruction of the Cameroonian authorities, programmed that should be conducted on the corpse of the late opposition leader and National President of MANIDEM Party, Ekane Anicet Georges, on that Tuesday at the mortuary of the Yaounde Central Hospital, was blocked by lawyers on behalf of the family of the decease.  The Ekane family and the team of Ekane Anicet’s lawyers, insisted that they will have to look for their own doctors or specialists in the domain of post mortem examination, to  accompany doctors  that the authorities designated, to do the post mortem.  So the post mortem or autopsy was not conducted on that Tuesday, December 2, 2025, as the authorities had wanted.

It should be noted that the team of lawyers led by Hippolyte Meli Takouang, that were defending Ekane Anicet, still remains in place after his death, because the matter is not yet closed. In fact from all indications, the matter, which includes Ekane Anicet’s tragic death, is far from over.

Message From The Yaounde Military Court

Meanwhile according to Lawyer Hippolyte Meli Takouang, the lead defence lawyer of Ekane Anicet, the defence team was surprised to receive a message at about 10 am on Wednesday, December 3, indicating that the autopsy operation on late Ekane Anicet’s corpse, started at 8am on that day, at the mortuary of the Yaounde Central Hospital. The message was signed by the Examining Magistrate at the Yaounde Military Tribunal, who was alleged to have ordered the autopsy to be carried out on that day. However the lawyers of the EKane Family knew so well that the CPDM Regime, was behind the decision to go ahead with the autopsy, without the representatives of the Ekane family and lawyers.  However Barrister Hippolyte Meli Takouang, on behalf of his colleagues and the Ekane family, warned that any autopsy unilaterally conducted on the instruction of the authorities, ignoring the concerns of the Ekane Anicet’s lawyers, and the Ekane family, will of course not be accepted. He questioned the reason for the rush by the authorities.

Desecration Of Corpse

When on Thursday, December 4, 2025, it became clear that the authorities asked the two doctors that were designated to do the autopsy, to go ahead with it in the morning of Wednesday, December 3, without the representatives of Ekane Anicet’s lawyers and family, the lawyers quickly concerted, on the next action.  Barrister Hippolyte Meli Takouang told the media that the lawyers have resolved that they will sue the medical personnel, who carried out the post mortem in breach of professional ethics, for desecration or profanation of the corpse of their late client.  The lawyers and the Ekane family lashed out at the controversial autopsy that the authorities forced through on Wednesday, December 3, as another provocation, and said it was inadmissible.  Of course the lawyers, the Ekane family, the MANIDEM Party and others, will certainly not recognize the CPDM regime’s own result of the autopsy.  They say from all indications, the CPDM regime was against the presence of the specialists that the lawyers and the Ekane’s family, had said, would represent them during the operation.

It should be noted that Ekane Anicet’s lawyers and the Ekane family made their position clear to the authorities on Tuesday, December 2, and blocked the autopsy that was scheduled by the authorities to take place on that, day, from taking place. The understanding at the time of separation on that Wednesday, December 3, was that a new date for the autopsy would be fixed, and Ekane Anicet’s lawyers informed.

As Barrister Hippolyte Meli Takouang explained, they as lawyers do not have the technical expertise on autopsy operation, and that was why it became imperative for them to contact some trusted medical experts in the domain of post –mortem examination, to represent them and the Ekane family.  But to the embarrassment of Barrister Meli and his colleagues, they received a message the very next day (Wednesday, December 4, 2025) at about 10 am,  nforming them that the autopsy started at 8am. It is very likely that by the time the message was sent to the lawyers, the operation was already over.

Lack Of Transparency

As aforementioned, there is in fact no doubt that the Ekane family, the MANIDEM Party, as well as the millions of sympathizers in the country and beyond, will not accept the result of the post – mortem examination or autopsy on the corpse of late Ekane Anicet, which the authorities forced through. The authorities ignored the rational demand by Ekane Anicet’s lawyers and family, who wanted their own designated specialists, to accompany those designated by the authorities, for the operation.

It should be noted in a related development, that  the British High Commission in Yaounde, Cameroon, had  in reaction to Ekane Anicet’s death, urged the Cameroonian authorities to ensure that the investigation into the circumstances of the death of Ekane Anicet in custody,  as  was announced by the Government, should be “conducted thoroughly and transparently”.  But the controversial autopsy that took place on Wednesday, December 3, completely lacked transparency.

In a situation where Ekane Anicet’s lawyers, the Ekane family, and the  MANIDEM Party of which Ekane Anicet was National President,  are all suspecting the  CPDM regime to be culpable for Ekane Anicet’s death in custody, the regime should have strived to act wisely. For the regime to have gone ahead to order that the autopsy be conducted, in the absence of the representatives of the family and lawyers, only worsen the situation.

Was Ekane Anicet Assassinated

Late Ekane Anicet Georges

At the MANIDEM Party’s headquarters in Douala, there has since the tragic death of Ekane Anicet on Monday, December 1, conspicuously been a banderole on which is printed a question. The question is whether Ekane Anicet died a natural death, or whether he was assassinated.

There is already a lot of distrust of the authorities in the Ekane Anicet affair, and this lack of transparency in the post mortem examination, only worsen things. There are many members of the Ekane family and the MANIDEM Party that mince no words, in referring to the death of Ekane Anicet as an assassination.  It should be noted that when Ekane Anicet left his hospital bed at the Military Medical Centre of the National Gendarmerie, to the Yaounde Military Court where he and Djamen Tchameni, as well as Prof Aba’a Oyono, were taken to meet the Examining Magistrate (‘Commissaire du Gouvenement’) of the Military Tribunal, Ekane crashed when they got there, and so had to be taken back to the Military Medical Centre.

Even then, he was still not transferred to the better equipped Yaounde Central Hospital, as he and his lawyers had repeatedly pleaded. Irate members of the Ekame family and MANIDEM Party, argue that there are different forms of assassination.

Reaction of Kamto And Nintcheu

Prof Maurice Kamto

Even Prof Maurice Kamto and Hon Jean Michel Nintcheu, respectively the National Presidents of MRC and FCC political parties, in their different reactions to the death of Ekane Anicet in custody, both referred to the incident as “Un Crime d’Etat”, that is, a crime committed by the State, meaning in this context, the Government.  Suffice thus to say as aforementioned, that for the authorities to have ordered that the autopsy goes ahead on December 3, ignoring the Ekane family and lawyers, only worsen the situation.  For example, following the unilateral decision and act that the authorities did on December 3 as regard the autopsy, the Ekane family has made it clear that they get trusted or credible specialists, to do an autopsy on the corpse of late Ekane Anicet, before any burial can take place

.Ekane Anicet Died On His 38th Day In Detention

It would be recall that Ekane Anicet Georges had been sick for quite a while. He had been in and out of hospital a number of times. But despite his visible poor health situation, he was inhumanely arrested in his base in Douala on October 24, 2025, and whisked off to the nation’s capital, Yaounde, together with another veteran politician, DJEUKAM TCHAMENI.  To be precise, they were incarcerated at the Gendarmerie Headquarters in Yaounde, commonly known by the French acronym, SED.  There was no official explanation or reason advanced for their arrest, though it was thought to be connected to their support to the former member of government, ISSA TCHROMA BAKARY, the FSNC leader and candidate at the October 12, 2025 presidential election, who proclaimed himself winner of the election.

Meanwhile, due to the deteriorating health situation of the 74 year old Ekane, he was moved to the Military Medical Centre of the National Gendarmerie in Yaounde. The authorities gave a death ear to his plea and that of his lawyers, that he should be moved to the Yaounde Central Hospital, which is better equipped.

Suffice to say that Ekane Anicet passed away in the fateful morning of December 1, 2025. It was really ironical that after Ekane’s death, his corpse was taken to the mortuary of the Yaounde Central Hospital; the hospital where authorities had refused to transfer him for better medical attention.  The shocking news that the veteran opposition leader, Ekane Anicet Georges, had died in custody in the morning of December 1, 2025, landed like a bombshell across the country, sparking a lot of anger.  Many Cameroonians, especially those that stand for change, have since been boiling in range, and have already declared the late Ekane Anicet, a martyr.

Reaction of British High Commission To The Death Of Ekane Anicet

Meanwhile, the British High Commission in Yaounde – Cameroon, earlier in the week expressed its sadness and concern as regard the death in custody on December 1, 2025, of the National President of MANIDEM Political Party, EKANE ANICET GEORGES; a veteran and popular opposition politician in the country.   Ekane who was based in Douala, died in the nation’s capital, Yaounde, where he had been on detention since October 24, 2025.

The reaction of the British High Commission in Cameroon to the tragic death of Ekane Anicet, is contained in a statement issued in both English and French; the two official languages of Cameroon, by the High Commission in Yaounde.

BELOW IS The English Version Of The STATEMENT BY THE BRITISH HIGH COMMISSION IIN CAMEROON, IN ITS ENTIRETY:

“The British High Commission is saddened and concerned by the death in custody of Mr Anicet Ekane, President of the MANIDEM Political Party. We extend condolences to his family and loved ones. We have also encouraged the authorities to   strengthened measures that guarantee the health, safety and rights of all detainees, and stand ready to support all these efforts”.
